In a poker game, all players must put up an initial amount of money before receiving their cards. This contribution is called the ante and it is usually small. This helps create a pot right from the start of the game and encourages competition among the players.

Once everyone has their antes in the pot, a dealer will deal each player five cards face down. Once all of the players have their cards, they must decide whether to continue betting in a round, or fold their hand. When the player to your left makes a bet, you can either “call” his or her bet by putting in the same number of chips as him or raise it. If you raise the bet, then the person to your left must call your bet or fold his or her hand. If you don’t want to raise your bet, you can say “check.”

After the flop, the dealer puts a third card on the table that all players can use. Then another betting interval begins. The player with the highest ranked hand wins the pot.

There is also a fifth and final card that the dealer places on the board. This is the river and it gives players another chance to bet. The highest ranked hand wins the river.

In some poker games, players contribute to a special fund called the kitty. Typically, each player will cut one of the lowest-denomination chips from each pot in which they have raised a bet. The kitty is used to pay for things like new decks of cards and food or drinks. Any chips remaining in the kitty at the end of the game are divided equally among the players.
